Sequential and figure ground

To introduce the concept of Gestalt principles, which emphasize the relationship of objects in design, I completed a project that experimented with the interaction between figure and ground. I was instructed to create a fold-out that contained the word typography. However, each letter in typography had to collaborate with a number. This project was required to be in black and white. Additionally, for the letters and numbers, one had to be black and one had to be white.
This challenged me to create a relationship between objects within a design. I decided to reflect on the Gestalt principle of continuation. I attempted to have each letter form flow together. Additionally, I wanted the word typography to be the main focus of my design. I did this by making the letter forms larger than the numbers to create a sense of hierarchy. This project allowed me to think of an object's relationship in design in a new way.

I felt as if my design did not properly meet the expectations of the assignment. For my revised version, I explored more of the relationship between forms versus forcing them to have a relationship. I completely altered my thinking and changed my design.
