Album Cover
Album covers are one of the many examples of how design can impact our interactions and feelings towards an idea, activity, or object. We pick up books because of their cover, we buy posters based on their visuals, and we crave design. Recreating an album cover was a fun project to emphasize that design is everywhere.
I picked to redesign “Live from Red Barn Radio” by Tyler Childers. Not only do I love the music from this album, but it also has sentimental meaning. I think of my brother every time I listen to it and get chills from each song. The album speaks on the troubles of life, including a personal battle between seeking religion and growing distant from God.
After researching Tyler Childers’ history, I knew I wanted the album cover to reflect Kentucky and the topics that the songs address. I created sketches and implemented elements from the drawings into my final design. The final album cover includes a bar and a church that sit across from each other to reference the battle between sin and faith. I included Kentucky’s state flower on both sides of the cover. For the album labels, I recreated Kentucky’s quilt pattern using snakes (to represent sin) and crosses (to represent faith). This project taught me the importance of using imagery to represent a concept and the power we have as designers to tell a story.
The Design process
Explored different ideas and approaches such as physical collage, digital collage, and photography through the process of brainstorming, sketching, and digital ideation to create an album cover.
